WHAT IS THE CHOICE COMMUNITY COUNCIL?
The CHOICE Community Council was founded by then Munster Police Chief William Sudbury and Mrs. Paula Nellans in August 1994 and consists of concerned citizens from all walks of life.  Our mission is an important one:
  1. To educate the public on the dangers of crime, gangs, drugs, and violence.
  2. To promote and maintain a safe environment.
  3. To promote TOTAL community cooperation and involvement.
  4. To make the public aware of the potential for gangs and associated activities.
  5. To prevent the formation or escalation of gangs and their activities.

The CHOICE Community Council allows residents to interact and partner up with the Munster Police Department on a variety of helpful and exciting programs throughout the year.  Currently CHOICE co-sponsors the following events and programs:
  • Annual National Night Out Against Crime Celebration
  • Women's Self-Defense Classes
  • Munster Neighborhood Crime Watch Program
  • Munster Business Crime Watch Program
  • Beautification Projects in Munster
  • Autism Awareness Badges for Munster Police officers to wear in April
  • McGruff the Crime Dog Costume for use during community events

2020 NNO Volunteers

Volunteers during Munster's 2020 National Night Out Against Crime Celebration, many of which are active Choice Community Council participants who help to plan the event each year.  The event has been consistently ranked as one of the best National Night Out events in the United States for the past five years and was ranked as the #1 event in 2020 for Munster's population category.

CHOICE also allows residents to provide suggestions on town laws, safety issues, and issues relating to education.  CHOICE pushes legislation that is beneficial towards the safety of the public.
Women's Self Defense Class 2019
Choice Volunteers assist during a Women's Self-Defense Class at Wilbur Wright Middle School.  Choice sponsored pepper spray for each of the participants, arranged for instructors, and greeted the class participants as they arrived.
Dog Walker Watch
The Choice Community Council is also a regular sponsor of the Munster Dog Walker Watch Program, which encourages residents who walk their dogs to look out for suspicious activity as well as their neighbors while doing so.  Pictured are some of the 2021 class participants wearing the t-shirts that Choice sponsored.
Autism Awareness
Munster Police Officers display their blue Autism Awareness badges that the Choice Community Council sponsored in April 2024.

Any concerned resident is welcome to attend the meetings if they wish to be a part of this important organization.  The CHOICE Council meets four times a year (in January, April, July, and October) or in special sessions when necessary.  Donations to CHOICE from the public are always welcome and will be used to fund our various community programs.  For more information please contact Officer James Ghrist of the Munster Police Department at 836-6639.
McGruff
The Choice Community Council sponsored a McGruff costume in 2019 which is used during many community programs and events along with crime prevention tips and announcements for the public.
