Town of Munster Indiana

Munster's 29th Annual National Night Out Against Crime Celebration will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in and around the area of the Munster Community Pool, located at 8837 Calumet Avenue in Munster, Indiana.  The purpose of the National Night Out is to promote positive police and community partnerships through a variety of both fun and educational activities for all ages. 

Munster's event has consistently ranked as one of the top National Night Out events in the United States for the past number of years (RANKED #1 in 2020 by the National Association of Town Watch in our population category) thanks to the great support and participation from our community.

Last year, our event enjoyed its highest attendance ever in booth participants, volunteers, sponsors, and overall attendance (estimated at over 5,000 throughout the evening) and we hope to have an even larger event this year.  Our event will include a Community Parade, free swimming for Munster residents, games, door prizes, over 120 booth participants, food, emergency vehicle displays, The Magic of Keelan Wendorf, music, safety information, K-9 demonstrations, barrel car train rides, an awesome CLOSING FIREWORKS SHOW sponsored by Krazy Kaplan's Fireworks, and more.

CITIZENSHIP AWARD WINNERS

Our Citizenship Award Winners are honored each year by the Munster Police Department in recognition of their continued volunteer hours, sponsorship, or support of our police department's community policing programs and efforts.  This year's award winners will be announced this summer!

PLEASE DISPLAY BLUE LIGHTS JULY 30-AUGUST 6!

Residents, businesses, schools, and faith-based groups are encouraged to display blue exterior lighting in between July 30th through August 6th to show their support for positive police and community partnerships in Munster.  Thank you in advance for your support this year!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT PRE-EVENTS - July 30th through August 3rd

COMMUNITY POLICING VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER - Crime Watch Captains, Choice Community Council members, Dog Walker Watch volunteers, and Volunteers in Police Service are encouraged to participate in our Community Policing Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, July 30th (**PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS BY INVITATION ONLY!**).  Pizzas (sponsored by Dante's House of Pizza) and drinks will be served to the participants, safety updates will be provided, and several door prizes and years of service certificates were awarded that evening to selected volunteers.  Munster Police officers will also be in attendance to thank the volunteers for their service.  The time and location of this event will be emailed in advance to invited participants.

SENIOR SAFETY BINGO - The Munster Police Department and Munster Parks & Recreation will hold their annual "Senior Citizen Safety Bingo" Event on Thursday, August 1st at the Munster Social Center.  Members of the "Keenagers" Program are invited to play bingo through the Parks Department for their usual prizes, however, safety equipment (carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, etc.) will also be placed on a table for winners to choose from (prizes generously sponsored by ACE HARDWARE in Munster).  In addition, the Munster Police Department's Community Policing Unit will provide safety tips and information for the participants in regards to personal safety and home security tips.  For more information about how you can participate, please contact the Munster Parks & Recreation at 219-836-PARK.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE - On Friday, August 2nd, a Canned Food Drive will be held at the Munster Police Department from 9:00am until 2:00pm. The items will benefit a local food pantry and individuals in need.  Please stop by to drop off some items to help others!

CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECKS - On the morning of Saturday, August 3rd from 8:00am until 11:00am, a Car Seat Check Event will be held along the front parking lot of the Munster Town Hall (1005 Ridge Road).  Certified child safety seat technicians from the Munster Police & Fire Departments, Powers Health, and Franciscan Health will spend the morning checking a number of child safety seats for proper installation for safety purposes.  Please enter the parking lot from Ridge Road if you'd like to have your child's safety seat checked! 

TOWN-WIDE BLOCK PARTIES ON AUGUST 3RD

All throughout that day, blocks and/or subdivisions in Munster will be encouraged to set up block parties to promote unity in their respective neighborhoods.  In an effort to encourage blocks to participate, the Town of Munster waives the usual block party deposit and barricades fee for AUGUST 3RD ONLY.  Officers, firefighters, and VIPS will visit the parties throughout the day and evening last year and selected the winners of the 2024 BLOCK UNITY AWARD will be awarded at the National Night Out.  Participating neighborhoods MUST RSVP BY JULY 1ST (NO LATE ENTRIES) in order to receive barricades and be eligible for judging.

Our event would not be successful without the assistance and support from the large number of our residents who help to plan the event, work booths, provide information to participants, perform music, and more.  Many of our volunteers are members of the Choice Community Council of Munster or serve as volunteer Neighborhood Crime Watch Captains but some are also high schools students who wished to provide service to their community.  Thank you to all of this year's volunteers for your assistance!
