Professional Profile

Ken Schoon is a retired science teacher and professor of science education at IU Northwest where he still assists at Commencement and its Science Olympiad tournament.  He’s a founding board member and current advisor to the Dunes Learning Center and the recipient of its 2019 Green Apple Award for environmental education.

Before being elected to Munster’s Town Council, he had served on Munster’s Plan Commission and its Board of Parks and Recreation.  He chaired Munster’s Centennial Committee in 2006-07.  In addition, he has nearly 40 years of activity in Munster civic organizations such as the Munster Lions Club, Munster Historical Society, the Munster Education Foundation, and the Munster Chamber of Commerce.  He’s also an elder and adult enrichment coordinator at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Ken has a bachelor’s degree in geology, a master’s in secondary education, and a Ph.D. in curriculum.  He is the author of three regional geology/history books: Calumet Beginnings, Dreams of Duneland, and Shifting Sands, the companion book to an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary.  For Munster’s centennial, he and Dr. Lance Trusty wrote and published Munster: A Centennial History (for sale at the Town Hall).  For this work, the Indiana Historical Society has awarded him the Dorothy Riker Hoosier Historian Award.  Ken is currently the secretary of the Munster Education Foundation.

Ken and Peg Schoon have lived in Munster for 46 of their 50 years of marriage.  Their two sons attended Munster public schools.  He is a fairly regular speaker at local service clubs and community organization meetings.
