Complaints About Animals

If you have an animal complaint (nuisance complaints or non-emergency) such as: barking dogs, animals depositing waste in neighboring yards, neighbors letting dogs run loose, etc., calls should be directed to the Community Service Officer at 219-836-6659.  The Community Service Officer's hours typically are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  If you have a complaint during the off hours, contact the Munster Police Department at 219-660-0001, and an officer will respond to verify and document the violation.  This information will then be forwarded to the Community Service Officer for a follow-up investigation.

Dead Animals

Contact an animal removal service for pick-up.  The Community Service Officer and the Humane Society do not pick-up dead animals.

Injured/Wounded Wildlife

Humane Indiana Wildlife, 570 North 450 East, Valparaiso, Indiana, 46383, may be able to assist and take in the injured/wounded wildlife.   Please call Humane Wildlife at 219-299-8027 for more information.  Per Munster Sec. 6-7(b) no person shall keep or permit to be kept any wild animal as a pet.

Limit on Number of Animals 

The Town Code allows residents to license three animals in one house. 

Lost Animals

Residents should call the Munster Police Department at 219-660-0001.  The dispatcher will take the information about your lost domestic animal and log that information into our lost animal book.  If and when your animal is located, the dispatcher will notify you.

Removal of Animal Waste

Section 6-10 of the Town Code states that the owner of every animal shall be responsible for the removal of any excretion deposited by his/her animal on public walks, recreation areas, or private property.

Registration of Animals

The Clerk-Treasurer's Office in the Munster Town Hall handles the registration of animals. All animals must have a current certificate of rabies vaccination to be registered.  Residents have thirty (30) days from the time they obtain the animal to license it with the town.
