Traffic Control Procedures and Information:

The Town takes citizen traffic control concerns seriously. To keep citizens informed on how traffic control concerns are aproached and handled in Munster, the Town finds it necessary to provide information about the specific process utilized in response to perceived speeding or traffic problems in an area. Town staff adheres closely to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices to be consistent with roadways across the country and the state, making our streets consistent with other areas and safely navigable. A copy of this document as well as further research regarding traffic control is available on this site.

If you have questions regarding the following policies and procedures, please call the Public Works Department at (219) 836-6970.

OUR PROCEDURE:
  • The Police Department is notified of the situation for enforcement purposes, and police presence is increased in the problem areas.
  • If appropriate, accident reports are reviewed over a time period of 24-36 months. If the police received the complaint first, Public Works is notified. We routinely set up our speed trailer in problem areas.
  • Traffic counts including speed data is gathered by public works. The correct way to do this is over a consecutive 48 hour period, between Tuesday and Thursday. That data is given to Jim Mandon, Town Engineer, for review and analysis. A copy of the report is prepared and reviewed with compliance to the Manual. All decisions are made on the basis of sound engineering.

As traffic studies are conducted and results are tabulated, the staff will post the findings below. Information about the recent studies conducted at Crestwood and Whitehall Garden are available and linked below.

Based on speed studies performed in these area, the data suggests that traffic calming measures are not warranted at this time:
