It is the policy of the Munster Police Department to offer services designed to increase community awareness and involvement in an effort towards combating crime before it occurs.
 
Crime prevention is the anticipation, recognition, and evaluation of a crime risk.  Action is required  to remove or reduce a crime risk.  Crime prevention is a shared responsibility of the Munster Police Department and the citizens of the community.  The responsibility of the Munster Police Department is to acquire and disseminate the most current information of a proactive nature to enable the citizens to be crime prevention oriented.  It is the citizen's responsibility to actively participate and use this information.
 
The Munster Police Department's Crime Prevention Program is ongoing and evolving.  Crime Prevention itself is the responsibility of all the members of this department, sworn and civilian.
 
The department's Crime Prevention Program is comprised of the following aspects:
  • Neighborhood and Business Crime Watch Programs.
  • Operation Identification wherein the department provides an engraver to residents without charge.
  • Premise Survey program which is a department response to requests for security examination of residences and businesses.
  • Police/School Relations Presentations wherein at the request of an area school, a police officer will go into the school and give a talk on a predetermined subject.
