What is the Town's Ordinance concerning blight?
Section 18-24 states that the failure to maintain houses, buildings, or structures, or real estate, shall be in violation if the lack of maintenance results in any of the following: 1. Structural deterioration rendering the house unsafe; 2. An unsafe or unhealthy condition of public utilities used in connection with the house, building or structure; 3. The existence of a usage conducive to the propagation of illness or disease; and/or; 4. A gross or notorious state of general disrepair or dilapidation, or an imminent hazard to public health, safety and welfare, such that a blight on the neighborhood exists causing economic devaluation of surrounding properties.
What Boards and Commissions does the Town have?
The successful operation of the Town is dependent upon the efforts of the volunteers who serve on our various Boards and Commissions.
How can a citizen apply for appointment to a Town Board or Commission?
If you are interested in becoming involved in the Town government by serving on a Board or Commission, stop by the Clerk-Treasurer's Office and pick up a Nominating Committee application or call the office at 836-6940. All applicants are screened by the Nominating Committee with final appointments made by the Town Council.
May I camp in a park?
No. Camping is not allowed in any Munster park.

How do I make a complaint about a town service?
Complaints should be forwarded according to their topic to the most appropriate Town Department. If this is not clear, report it to the Town Manager's Office. Consult the Departmental Directory on the website.

If you have a complaint about a collection service, call Homewood Disposal at 219-931-9000.
Where do I get permits for construction?
Refer to the link below to review and print a permit application. Permits can be submitted by email to communitydevelopment@munster.org, dropbox in Town Hall parking lot, or in Town Hall, mailed in, or faxed (219) 836-6542. Permit applications are also available at the Community Development Department, at 1005 Ridge Road. How can copies of Town Records be obtained?
Copies of Town Records may be requested from the Office of the Clerk-Treasurer. Public Records may be viewed in that department. There may be a copy charge

What can be done about deteriorated property and other dangerous health and safety situations?
Maintenance of deteriorated property is regulated by Town Ordinances. The Community Development Department provides the primary enforcement of these Ordinances. For general information or problem, situations contact a Town Building Inspector at 836-6990 and be prepared to give specific information on the location of the problem with the street address of the deteriorated property.

Whom do I contact when the drainage ditch near my house floods and causes flooding in my basement/yard/driveway, etc.?
If there is any problem with a drainage ditch, contact the Munster Public works Department at 836-6970 or 836-6971.
Whom do I contact in case of a downed power line or a damaged transformer?
If you see a downed power line, damaged transformer, or other potentially dangerous electric-related situation, please call 911 to report it.
Whom do I call if I do not have electric service?
Report either problem immediately to NIPSCO due to the risk of fire or shock. Call 800-464-7726, for TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) 1(800)635-0952.
What is the number for emergency ambulance service in the Town of Munster.
Emergency Ambulance Service is on the 911 system.
Are grills allowed in the park?
No grilling or open flames allowed in any parks.
How do I reserve a shelter?
Reservations are taken in person at the Munster Town Hall, Parks, and Recreation Department. All fees must be paid in full and include the rental fee plus 7% sales tax and a damage deposit. The cleanup/damage deposit is refunded one week after your rental as long as no damage is done to the facility and it is left clean. It will be mailed to you in the form of a check. Centennial Park shelters can be reserved by calling (219) 836-6930.
Where are traffic fines paid?
It varies according to the type of fine. Please refer to any paperwork you received with your ticket.
Does the Town provide demonstrations of fire equipment and fire services for civic and other groups?
The Fire Department conducts tours, demonstrations of fire equipment, and other safety programs. If you would like to sign up for a Munster Fire Department program, contact the Fire Department at 836-6960.
How do I get a permit to use a fire hydrant?
The Town of Munster allows the use of town fire hydrants by registered developers ONLY. To use a fire hydrant, contact the Water Department at 836-6949. You will be required to obtain and hook up a water meter to the hydrant, and to pay for the water used. There is a deposit required for the water meter.
How do I make arrangements for a fire prevention program or to receive fire prevention information?
The Munster Fire Department sponsors a wide variety of programs designed to help educate the public on fire safety. If you are interested in attending one of these programs, contact the Fire Department at 836-6960 for more information.
Can I light a fire or use fireworks in the parks?
Both fireworks and fires of any kind are prohibited on all town property, including all Munster parks.
How do I get a copy of a fire report (usually in conjunction with insurance claims)?
Fire reports are available from the Munster Fire Department office located at 550 Fisher St. Residents should call 836-6960 to receive a copy of their fire report. Insurance companies must submit a written request to the Munster Fire Department to receive a fire report.
Can I have a firepit in Munster?
Yes. It must have enclosed side (8” tall) and bottom. Only clean wood (no painted wood, garbage, plastic, tires, etc.) No burns during dry condition or high winds and cannot be a nuisance to neighbors.

What day are my garbage and recycling?
All (single-family) residents have all of their garbage and recycling picked up on one designated day dependent on the area in which they live. New residents will be informed of their collection day. If you are unsure of your day, or whether the collection will be affected by a Holiday, you can call 836-6971 or 836-6970.
How and to who do I report (1) cut or severed gas mains,(2) open gas mains, or (3) the smell of gas in your home/business?
When a gas leak is detected in a person's home they should leave their home and call 911, for the Fire Department. Gas leaks that are not life-threatening can be reported to NIPSCo, at 1(800)634-3524.
Where can I obtain handicapped parking stickers/cards?
Temporary handicapped stickers may be obtained at the Munster Police Department. Permanent handicapped identification cards may be obtained from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
What are the construction requirements for servicing handicapped persons?
The Town of Munster follows the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Indiana State Accessibility Standards for the handicapped requirements for servicing handicapped individuals. For specific information, contact the Community Development Department at 836-6990.
To whom do I call to report a spill or leak of hazardous materials?
Spills or leaks of Hazardous material should be reported to the Fire Department by calling the emergency 911 number.
How do I properly dispose of household hazardous waste?
The Lake County Solid Waste Board sponsors household hazardous waste days with collection sites throughout Lake County. The scheduled days and materials that may be disposed are published well in advance of the special collection days. For more information contact the Lake County Solid Waste Board at 219-853-2420.
To whom do I report situations involving the illegal or improper disposal of hazardous material?
If the material being improperly disposed of is flammable or there is a danger from gas being released, you should contact the Fire Department by calling 911. If the material is being discharged into the Munster sewer system, you should contact Munster Public Works at 836-6970. In all other cases, the Community Development Department should be contacted at 836-6990. If you notice the problem after hours, you may call 219-660-0001, and police dispatch will notify the proper department.
What holidays are officially observed by the Town?
New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday following Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
How do I report inspections?
To schedule an inspection, contact the Building Department at least 24 hours prior to the requested time. You may contact us by phone at (219) 836-6990 or by email at communitydevelopment@munster.org. You will receive a confirmation email. Upon confirmation, inspections are placed on the schedule. What is the definition of a "junk motor vehicle".
A "junk motor vehicle" is defined to be any motor vehicle or part, or parts thereof, which meets any one of the following qualifications. 1. Does not display a current valid state license plate; 2. Cannot be operated safely under its own power; 3. Is qualified but is not carried on the most recent tax assessment records of the county' 4. Does not have equipment upon it which is in good working order and adjustment, as required by the laws of the state; 5. As to a part or parts of any motor vehicle only, is not kept inside a garage or other other building.
Where do I report "junk vehicles"?
Report any and all "junk motor vehicles" to the Community Service Officer at 836-6659. The Community Service Officer may issue a warning and/or a fine. The police may order a "junk motor vehicle" removed.
Can leaves be burned inside the Town of Munster?
Leaf burning is prohibited in the Town of Munster.
Does the Town of Munster provide leaf pickup?
The Public Works Department collects leaves for 2 months (mid-October to December) in the fall depending on weather and two weeks in the spring. The service is available without charge to single-family residential homes. There are no specific days when the street department will vacuum your leaves. The street department begins at the north end of Town and works their way south. The leaf vacs will pass your home approximately every two weeks. The street department starts from the area they left off previously.
How and where do I obtain legal descriptions of property?
The Lake County Recorder’s Office, 2293 North Main Street, Crown Point, IN 46307, (219) 755-3730, will provide assistance in locating property deeds, which include a legal description of the property.
What type of registration is needed to start a business and where does a prospective business operator acquire a business registration?
All businesses must obtain a business registration each year from the Clerk-Treasurer's Office. Forms are available on our website under Clerk-Treasurer, General Information, Services. Where do I apply for marriage licenses?
To obtain a marriage license, you must go to the Lake County Clerk's Office in Crown Point. The number is 219-755-3460.
Where do I apply for licenses to operate vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles?
Motor vehicle licenses are obtained through any branch of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The nearest branches are located in Schererville and in Hammond.
What do I do when I am locked out of my vehicle?
Locked vehicles are classified as emergency or non-emergency situations. An emergency situation involves any threat to life as a child locked inside a car, a person alone after dark, or an adult without the capacity to let himself out. In an emergency situation, call 911. For non-emergency situations (no threat to life) call a locksmith.
