How to Start a Neighborhood Watch Group

Officer James Ghrist of the Munster Police Department stands in front of a Neighborhood Crime Watch sign at Beacon Place and Manor Avenue after the reorganization and reimplementation of the program in April 2005.  This area started the first new Neighborhood Crime Watch Group after the program.

In this day and age, we sometimes wait to take action until something bad happens or problems in our neighborhoods begin to arise.  You can help make your neighborhood a safer place to live now by leading by example and encouraging others to take a stand against crime.  That being said, the Community-Oriented Policing Division of the Munster Police Department is searching for citizens interested in serving as Block Captains for their areas of town.

Since the re-organization of the Munster Neighborhood Crime Watch program in May 2005, over 100 Crime Watch Groups have formed all over town involving thousands of dedicated citizens.  The process of starting your own Neighborhood Crime Watch Group is simple:
  • Contact Officer Ghrist and inform him of your interest and the area that you live in (you can also provide your information to him by clicking here).  Officer Ghrist will drop off letters in your door for you to place inside the doors of your neighbors (you may also talk with them personally if you wish to do so).  These letters introduce you as the Block Captain, display information on the purpose and benefits of joining the program, and instructs them to e-mail you with their basic information if they are interested in joining the Watch Group.
  • Each Monday you will begin to receive the Munster Neighborhood Watch Weekly Report containing announcements and news, selected police blotter items, arrests in Munster that week, and crime prevention tips by email.  Forward this emailed report to your neighbors' email addresses by use of a distribution list.  If you do not know how to set up an email distribution list, we can help you set one up.  The Weekly Report has received a huge amount of positive feedback and has gone a long way towards keeping citizens informed about crime incidents in Munster.  For more information on the Weekly Report, click here.
  • Once organized, you will have "Neighborhood Watch Program in Force" signs posted in your area.  The number of signs will be based upon your total membership.
  • As a Block Captain, you are encouraged (but not required) to attend quarterly Crime Watch Meetings (in January, April, July, and October) where information is presented regarding recent crime activity during the previous quarter.  Block Captains are also asked to encourage their neighbors to attend as well so that everyone can stay well informed.

You will find that organizing and running a Neighborhood Watch Group requires very little work but that it can pay great dividends down the road towards helping to keep your neighborhood safer.  It's better to be proactive than reactive, so don't wait until after a significant crime occurs to start a Neighborhood Watch Group in your area.  Take steps now to help prevent criminals from setting up shop in your neighborhood.
