Lightning Detection System and Weather Warning System

The Thorguard Lightning Prediction Warning System will be operational year-round at the following parks and schools in town: Community Park, Beech Park, Grove Park, Frank H. Hammond Park, Elliott School, Eads School, Munster High School Football Field, Stewart Park, White Oak Park, West Lakes Park, Bluebird Park, and Centennial Park.   These parks were strategically chosen to cover the widest range of community parks in the event the alarm is activated.  Warning System guidelines are posted at these locations for your awareness.

The Thorguard Lightning Prediction System will sound a warning horn (15-second blast) when a potentially dangerous weather situation is approaching.  If you hear the alarm, clear the park immediately and seek proper shelter.  All activities must cease once you hear the horn.    Wait for the all-clear (3 short horn blasts), before returning to normal activities.  If the all-clear does not sound after 30 minutes, cancel your park event.  This system is here for your safety.

NOTE:  The system will be operational 7 days a week from 6 am to 11 pm. The warning system may be tested, on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 am.

Always avoid open areas, water, metal, wire fences, overhead wires, and power lines, isolated trees, elevated ground, dugouts and never use cellular phones.

The following precautions should be taken if the alarm sounds

  1. Cease all activities immediately when the alarm sounds
  2. Clear the park and seek proper shelter
  3. Wait for the all-clear horn (3 short blasts)
  4. If the all clear is not sounded, cancel your park event
  5. Use good judgment if threatening weather approaches and no alarm is heard.
  6. Always avoid open areas.
