Required Inspections for New Construction

Required inspections for new construction: 

  • Before pouring any concrete including but not limited to: footings, foundations, stoops, floors, walks, driveways, aprons, piers, post holes, etc. all forms and reinforcement must be in place at the time of inspection.
  • Before backfill of the foundation walls, footing drains, damp-proofing. Foundation insulation must be in place at the time of inspection.
  • Before backfilling the water tap, sewer tap, and storm sewer tap.
  • Before covering underground electric lines, water and sewer lines (underground plumbing), heating ducts, etc.
  • Rough framing before insulation.
  • Rough plumbing before insulation.
  • Rough electric before insulation.
  • Rough mechanical before insulation.
  • Water meter space bar inspection, prior to meter installation.
  • Insulation inspection, after insulation is installed and vapor barrier is in place.
  • Drywall pre-tape inspection, after drywall is installed and before taping.
  • Final framing.
  • Final plumbing.
  • Final electric.
  • Final mechanical.
  • Final grading inspection. A certificate of final grades prepared by a registered Indiana land surveyor must be submitted.
  • Additional inspections may be deemed necessary by the building department.   

NOTE: All rough and final inspections must be called in by the general contractor when all four trades indicate they are ready for their inspections. All other inspections must be called in by the contractors performing the work. To arrange for an inspection, call the Building Department at (219) 836-6990 during normal business hours.
