PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT | NICTD Test Train and Safety Resources
The South Shore Line and West Lake Corridor Project team will be conducting electric train testing in Go Hammond and Town of Munster, Indiana from December 15 through December 19. This testing will take place in the evening and overnight hours from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM CT.
The test train will consist of NICTD’s Passenger Electric Multi-Unit (EMU) equipment, reaching speeds up to 79 MPH. The test trains are required to use their air horns and bells during this time until all grade crossings are commissioned and the Quiet Zone is established in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). In order to test the grade crossing warning devices, NICTD personnel will be stationed at each crossing to flag/stop vehicular traffic on 12/15, 12/16, and 12/17.
With high-speed trains now present on the Monon Corridor, exercise additional caution and stay safe when crossing at designated railroad crossings. Never trespass or try to beat a train.
Always obey warning signs, lights, and gates. Look both ways and stay alert. Trains can come from either direction at any time.
