bp appreciates the patience of Cobblestone residents and local businesses as our crews worked to secure the source of an oil sheen in Munster over the past week. We regret any inconvenience or disruptions that the local community may have experienced. The safety of the community, our crews, and the environment continues to be our top priority as we address this issue.

As you are aware, bp crews responded last week to a sheen found in a stormwater catch basin.  bp’s response identified the source, excavated around the pipeline, and secured the source of the release. bp has backfilled the excavation site this week. Throughout this response, bp has been in communication with local authorities, including the Munster Fire Department and Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Construction crews will return to the site in the next 2-3 weeks to install a liner in the section of the stormwater system closest to the pipeline. Additional remediation plans will be developed over the coming weeks. Here’s what you should know:

• Odors: Odors in the area should continue to dissipate.
• Inclement weather: We will continue to monitor the stormwater system until the stormwater liner is installed. We will have monitoring crews and equipment on site in an effort to ensure that no residual hydrocarbon enters the stormwater system.
• The site: We ask the public to continue to avoid any active work areas until these activities are complete.
