Chief's Message

scheckel

Hello, I am Chief Steve Scheckel and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Munster Police Department web site.

The Munster Police Department serves the Munster community located in Northwest Indiana on the Indiana/Illinois state line.  The Town of Munster boasts a highly rated school system, a continually growing medical facility which serves some of the finest medical practitioners available, and is home to the Northwest Indiana Center for Visual and Performing Arts.  Serving a population of 21,000 we have both a community atmosphere and the amenities of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Munster local law enforcement was first organized in 1907.  It was not until 1955 however that the Munster Metropolitan Police Department was adopted under Chief Harold Pritchard, with 2 full time and 23 volunteer officers.  Since Chief Pritchard, only 5 Police Chiefs have been at the helm of the Munster Police Department in 53 years.

Since its meager beginnings, the Munster Police Department has continued to grow as it serves our community.  Currently serving our citizens in 2008 is an organization of 38 sworn and 11 civilian full-time personnel.  Quartered in a newly renovated facility, is a police department that provides full service police, fire and medical dispatch with a state of the art computerized dispatch center.

The Munster Police Department has developed and will continue to promote the use of technology as a major law enforcement tool.  Currently, all squad cars have Mobile Data Access (computers) as well as in-car video systems.  However, as we move into the 21st century, men and women are as always our foundation.  Though a small department, assignments to patrol, criminal investigations and school liaisons are available.

The Munster Police Department continues to be one of the most educated, highly trained, technologically advanced police departments in Indiana and the Chicago metropolitan area.

The Town of Munster is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against persons based on race, color, religion, handicap, sex, age, or national origin and encourages women and minority applicants.

I encourage you to explore the many resources available on this site. This site has been designed to facilitate the use of the internet to research various crime issues and to enhance communication between the public and the police department.
