HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
Munster Police Department

This holiday season, Munster residents are asked to read and make note of the following safety tips.  Remember that while the holidays bring out the best in most people, it also brings out the worst in some people.  We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

WHEN YOU ARE OUT SHOPPING:
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash.
  • Be wary of people asking for directions while inside stores or asking you to read product labels for them, even if they appear to be harmless.  This is often a distraction technique used by pickpockets.  If someone bumps into you, check immediately to make sure that your wallet hasn't been taken.
  • Carry your wallet in your front pocket in crowds.  Keep your purse zipped up and over your arm, not in the basket.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Leave lights on, inside and out, in case you come home after dark.
  • Put purchased items inside the trunk where they can't be seen by parking lot thieves.
  • Park under a light pole.
  • Shop with a friend.
  • Keep a close eye on your children, especially in crowded malls or stores.  Educate them about strangers and what to do if they get lost.
  • If you think that you are being followed or watched, ask store security or call for a police officer to escort you to your vehicle.
  • Have your keys in your hand while walking to and from your vehicle.  They can make a good self-defense weapon.
  • If you come home and feel that someone was, or is inside your home, contact the Munster Police Department by cell phone or at a neighbor's home immediately.  Do not go inside.
  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
IF YOU ARE ATTACKED:
  • Remain calm.
  • Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.
  • Remember that pepper (self-defense) spray is not a solve-all but may help if you are attacked.  It must be out and ready, however, before the attack even begins.  If used, aim for the eyes and nose.
  • Don't resist, avoid the risk of injury.  Possessions can be replaced, but you cannot be.
  • Hand over your wallet or purse quickly.
  • Notify the Munster Police Department immediately.
  • Give a good description:  clothing, facial description, direction of travel are very important.
  • Press charges!  The police need your help to stop crime.

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING:
  • Stop your mail and newspaper delivery.
  • Put at least two lights and a radio on automatic timers.
  • Ask a neighbor to keep your property maintained (snow, grass, etc).
  • Leave a key with a trusted neighbor or friend.
  • Lock all of your doors and windows before you leave.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash.
  • Conceal valuables in your trunk whenever stopping for a period of time.
  • Carry a cell phone.
  • Be alert and cautious.
  • Keep an eye on your luggage.
  • Notify the Munster Police Department of when you will be gone.  Provide an emergency number along with the names of people who will have access to the residence while you are away.
